Happy New Year friends. I, for one, am glad the holidays
are over in one sense and also warmed by the time I spent with good friends,
starting new traditions. Before I went out of town for Christmas I played my Native
American flute at our Hospice, something I’ve been doing for about six years.
For some reason it was particularly emotional this year playing there. This is
my second holiday season alone, since my partner passed in the spring of 2011.
As I was playing the loved ones of patients would come out into the hallways
and listen or hum along. A boy, of about 8 walked up to me and said, “Excuse me
sir how much would it cost to play in my grandma’s room?” I stopped and told
him it would cost nothing and what was her room number. I often play in patient’s
rooms so that’s never an issue.
I began to play Oh Come Emmanuel then Silent Night. My
partner’s favorite carol also. The boy held one hand of his grandmother and his
mother the other hand. They were stroking her and crying. I was professional
and stalwart. After I left I had to find the restroom and had a decent cry. It
was tough but I was reminded how valuable a song from the heart it to people
needing comfort. They gave me a gift. Of course I’m only there maybe once or
twice a week when I can. The staff is there every day and they are the real
heroes.

I spent Christmas with a long-time friend and spent it
with his family in Albuquerque, NM. They made Posole, tamales, menudo, beans and chile galore and
it felt like the better memories from my own youth. We lit Luminarias in the bitter cold wind. Afterwards I was fortunate
to spend a few wonderful days with Butch and Laura Hall at their cabin in northern
New Mexico next to the Wild
Spirit Wolf Sanctuary a place for rescued Wolves and hybrid dogs. I love it
there. As I move into the New Year I am working to book more gigs, record and
release several albums, make as beautiful music as possible and tour. Promotion
begins on my newest CD “Strong Medicine” with a national campaign. I’m always
looking for new radio stations to send it to so please let me know about a
local station you listen to who might enjoy playing my style of music. Thank
